Talking to role models: De plastic s(l)oep
Since 2019, NN Group has been supporting Plastic Whale in its fight against plastic pollution. The aim of the partnership is to raise awareness around this problem. As part of this project, NN Group enabled Plastic Whale to shoot the documentary De Plastic S(l)oep (The Plastic Soup/Sloop). In this online video, investigative journalist Jeroen Smit meets four role models for the future in terms of plastic reduction. They talk about their fight against the fast-growing plastic soup.
Every year, around one hundred billion dollars worth of plastic is thrown away worldwide
Awareness is a great start
More and more people are aware of the consequences of plastic waste. That is a great start, but more is needed, and soon. Around a hundred billion dollars of plastic is thrown away every year worldwide. Because all those bottles, straws and toothbrushes do not decompose, the plastic soup continues to grow unabated. As a consequence, awareness of this issue is becoming more important every day.
Fishing for plastic
By collecting plastic waste and adding economic value to it, Plastic Whale encourages people to make an active contribution to reducing the plastic soup. The plastic collected in this way is used, for example, to make beautiful sloops and office furniture. The organisation is also committed to raising awareness around plastic use.
De Plastic S(l)oep
The documentary De Plastic S(l)oep tells the inspiring stories of Saskia, Lars, Nicholas and Eric. Jeroen Smit cruises through Amsterdam in the NN Plastic Whale boat, which is made of plastic lifted out of the canals. Along the way, he picks up role models who are each tackling the plastic problem in their own way. They show the urgency of the problem and are proof that we can act quickly when we work together.
